Twister Quilt!

The game Twister was invented in 1966.  According to the patent information issued, the game was filed on April 14th, 1966 and accepted on July 8th, 1969. The two names on the patent were Charles F. Foley and Neil Rabens. (source)

I remember playing Twister as a young girl and into my teens... and then after I married and had children, it was nothing for our friends to come over on the weekend for grilled burgers, homemade ice cream, and a game of Twister. We were still agile at that point in our lives.  Oh to be that young again!
I found this image online and cleaned it up, printed it off and took it over to Staples and had them blow it up for me to 36 x 42 inches.  I used a large piece of tracing paper and made pattern pieces from the ran off copy.  I used fusible to apply the dots and the figures.  Using all batik fabrics, I was able to create the quilt below.

I quilted each section with a different texture design.  I am really pleased with how it turned out.

I showed it to my hubby once it was finished and he asked who I had quilted it for.  I told him that I had made it myself.  He looked stunned. lol... Just goes to show that he is accustomed to seeing traditional quilts come from my workroom.  It was fun making this quilt and I think I shall have fun creating a few more.  I have to keep him guessing, now don't I? :)

I am a "child of the 60s" too. I remember the opening of McDonald's in our town. I also remember Twister although I don't think I ever played it. (not a game that attracts too many introverts I would think) The quilt is lovely.

Your quilt is really impressive, and so is your Gammill! That's the biggest sewing machine I've seen, my goodness! Is it big enough to quilt a king size quilt? I like how your pigtail pink brightened up your rooms, it's really amazing how much of a difference it can make. Thank you for sharing with us!

I remember the day Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. Were we ever excited! We used to have Twister parties with our family and friends too. It was a tradition we carried on with our own children well into the 70's and 80's. I doubt the my body would allow me to be the champion now! Thanks for the memories.

Grooooovy quilt! I also enjoyed the walk down memory lane. Growing up in SF during that time was an experience I will never forget, but left to attend college where influences were less and the " old college town" was small and more traditional. Of course, with times, things change and are never the same, but it's fun to reminisce. Thanks for sharing your awesome quilt.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. My bedroom was my folks' walk-in closet. It had a small chest of drawers, a rollaway bed and a very small vanity that my dad had built. I could lie in bed and watch Johnny Carson on the tv in my folks' bedroom. Of course, my room was right at the end of their bed, so I could hear it as well. Twister is a great game. Actually, at work even in the 80's some of us played cards together at noon. Occasionally, we would get together with our spouses at someone's home and play games (not cards as not all the spouses played card games). So, one night we drug out someone's Twister and drew for partners. We had an absolute blast. Thanks for participating. Your quilt is amazing. You did a wonderful job of recreating the box top. You are very clever in your approach. I'd probably have given up and not thought to have it that large. It is perfect. Again, thanks for participating and the inspiration.

Your quilt is absolutely the coolest! Your ability to replicate the image is totally groovey. I loved that you used different quilting motifs for each person. I loved playing that game, too. BTW, your studio is lovely and I think the pink is perfect - pink is my favorite color! Your upstairs rooms reminds me of mine but I'm rather envious you have room for a long-arm up there. "Peace", as we said in the 60s.
